Somatic Experiencing Touch
What happens in a Somatic Experiencing touch session?
Depending on your level of comfort, sessions may include teaching self-holding and or receiving supportive touch from the therapist. The therapist will touch specific areas of the body which are connected to the stress response. You will remain fully clothed, seated or rested on a massage table. The touch is still and the intention is to support your system towards containment, coherence and co-regulation.
Why is touch used?
Touch is a very direct way to restore the physiological states and patterns associated with very deep shock states that are locked in the body such as those that occur in early development (pre-cognition) and those that may not be reached by language or by tracking sensation.
Attuned touch, from a trained therapist, promotes an experience of co-regulation and develops the felt sense of safety, trust and nurturing that may have been missing in early development when the nervous system was forming. Nervous system neuroplasticity allows this capacity to develop at any age. In addition, touch stimulates nerve endings that slow down the bodies stress response (via the vagus nerve).
Touch is also used in Somatic Experiencing for mobilisation, completing defensive cycles and supporting inner awareness. This can be highly beneficial for shut down, freeze and dissociative states.
You will feel more present, relaxed, grounded and experience an increased sense of vitality. People will report noticing they are more trusting and open to connect with others, improved digestion, fear and anxiety easing, feeling emotionally regulated, breathing more expansively and generally experiencing more spaciousness and balance in the body.
Is touch available in every session?
Some clients come just for touch work while others do not want to utilise it at all. Other people’s sessions simply may not call for it.
Touch will always be an option and is introduced by talking about it for several sessions. You can decide if and when you are ready. We may also start by getting a sense of it by learning self-holding techniques or exploring boundary work.
It is always completely up to you and your right to decline is always fully supported. It is more important that you feel well informed and in control of your treatment.

“I came across Nicole's website when searching for therapy with a more somatic rather than cognitive focus. From my first contact with Nicole, where she described the type of therapy that she offered, I felt comfortable and secure. She worked with me to identify what I wanted and provided clear information on the approaches and techniques that she utilised.”
